St. John Maximovitch- ON THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE

THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE
By St. John Maximovitch.

Many people believe that to live according to the faith and to fulfill the will of God is very difficult. Actually—it’s very easy. One needs only attend to details, to trifles, and try to avoid evil in the slightest and most trivial things. This is the simplest and surest way to enter the world of the spirit and draw near to God.

A man often thinks that the Creator demands great things of him, that the Gospel insists on complete self- sacrifice, the abolition of one’s personhood, etc., as a condition of faith. A man is so frightened by this that he begins to be afraid of becoming acquainted with God, of drawing near to God, and hides himself from God, not even wishing to look into God’s Word. “If I can’t do anything important for God, then I’d just better stay away from things spiritual, stop thinking about eternity, and live ‘in a normal way’.”

There exists at the entrance to the spiritual realm a “hypnosis of great deeds:” one must either do some big thing or do nothing. And so people do nothing at all for God or for their souls! It is very strange—the more a man is devoted to the little things of life, the less he wishes to be honest or pure or faithful to God in those same little things. And, moreover, each one must adopt a correct attitude toward little things if one wishes to come near to the kingdom of heaven.

Wishes to come near: In this is summed up all the difficulties of the religious life. Often one wishes to enter into the kingdom of heaven quite unexpectedly, in some miraculous and magical way, or, by right—through some kind of great feat. But neither the one nor the other is the right way to find the higher world. One does not enter God’s presence in some wondrous manner while remaining indifferent on earth to the needs of the kingdom of God and its bright eternity, nor can one purchase the treasures of the kingdom of God by some kind of eternal act, however great that act might be. Yet good deeds, holy deeds are necessary for one to grow into a higher life, a bright will, a good desire, a heavenly psychology, a heart that is both pure and fair.

A glass of water: Verily, verily I say unto you that whosoever offers one of the least of these but a cup of cold water, in the name of a disciple, shall not lose his reward. In this saying of the Lord is the highest expression of the smallness of the good. “A glass of water”—this is not much.

Communicating in good spirit: In every communication between people there must without fail be a good spirit: this spirit is Christ, openly manifest or hidden. “In the name of a disciple:” this is the first step in communicating with another person in the name of Jesus Christ Himself.  Many people, not as yet knowing the Lord and the wondrous fellowship in His Name still have among themselves an unselfish, pure and human fellowship which brings them ever closer to the Spirit of Christ.

The lesser good is necessary: As a matter of fact, the lesser good is more necessary for mankind than the greater. People can get along with their lives without the greater good; without the lesser they cannot exist. Mankind perishes not from a lack of the greater good, but from an insufficiency of just this lesser good. The greater good is no more than a roof, erected on the brick walls of the lesser good.

The lesser, easier good was left on this earth for man by the Creator Himself, who took all the greater good upon Himself. Whosoever does the lesser, the same creates—and through him the Creator Himself creates—the greater good. Of our little good the Creator makes His Own great good. For as our Lord is the Creator who formed all things from nothingness, so is He more able to create the greater good from the lesser.

Through such lesser, easy work, done with the greatest simplicity, a man is accustomed to the good and begins to serve it with his whole heart, sincerely, and in this way enters into an atmosphere of good, lets down the roots of his life into new soil, the soil of the good. The roots of human life quickly accommodate themselves to this good earth, and soon cannot live without it... Thus is a man saved: from the small comes the great. “Faithful in little things” turns out to be “faithful in the greater.”

Our moral sense: Lay aside all theoretical considerations that it is forbidden to slaughter millions, women, children, and elderly; be content to manifest your moral sense by in no way killing the human dignity of your neighbor, neither by word, nor by innuendo, nor by gesture. Do not be angry over trifles against your brother vainly (Mt 5:22) or in the daily contacts of life speak untruth to your neighbor. These are trifles, small change, of no account; but just try to do this and you will see what comes of it.
Prayer: It is hard to pray at night. But try in the morning. If you can’t manage to pray at home than at least as you ride to your place of employment attempt with a clear head the “Our Father” and let the words of this short prayer resound in your heart. And at night commend yourself with complete sincerity into the hands of the Heavenly Father. This indeed is very easy.

And give, give a glass of cold water to everyone who has need of it; give a glass filled to the brim with simple human companionship to everyone that lack it, the very simplest companionship...

O wondrous path of little things, I sing thee a hymn! Surround yourselves, O people, gird up yourselves with little works of good— with a chain of little, simple, easy and good feelings which cost us naught, a chain of bright thoughts, words and deeds. Let us abandon the big and the difficult. That is for them that love it and not for us for whom the Lord in His Mercy, for us who have not yet learned to love the greater, has poured forth the lesser love everywhere, free as water and air.

-"Τι μεγάλο κακό που σε βρήκε, τώρα ποιος θα σε βοηθά στις δουλειές σου;
Πρέπει λοιπόν να δείχνουμε απόλυτη εμπιστοσύνη Στον Θεό μας, όχι στα λόγια αλλά έμπρακτα! Υπάρχει άραγε περίπτωση αν αφεθούμε όπως ένα μικρό παιδί στο Θέλημά του, να νιώσουμε ποτέ θλίψη, άγχος , στενοχώρια;

On Bows and Prostrations...

From apostolic times, Christians have been guided by general rules so that the worship of God should be ordered fittingly and reverently, and our acting in concert in church is a confession of our unanimity of Faith, and so naturally there are directions about the making of prostrations. Having said this, two things must be borne in mind. First, although in general we act in concert, within Orthodox worship there is no strait jacketting. Not everyone in church behaves in exactly the same manner. On a given day, one person might prostrate more than another, or be moved to do so at slightly different points in the service. Secondly, we must remember that some are old or infirm, and may not be able to make prostrations; we should not judge them if we see them"merely bowing" on a prostration day.
There are canonical and liturgical directions which deal with this subject. The full prostration is seen as a penitential act or an act of the deepest reverence, and therefore on days when the Church is celebrating festively they are in general not enjoined in church.

The twentieth canon of the First Ecumenical Council specifically forbids kneeling, and thus prostrations, on every Sunday (it being the feast of the Resurrection) and on the days of Pentecost, the fifty days between Pascha and Pentecost-Trinity Sunday.

In the Great Fast, prostrations are enjoined by the rubrics in the services, particularly in association with the Prayer of Saint Ephraim and the lenten verses. However, even during this penitential period of the year, no prostrations are enjoined on Saturdays or Sundays. Perhaps as a parallel to the lenten practice, it is general in most parishes not to make full prostrations on Saturdays.

Great Feasts are also joyous occasions and thus it it customary not to make prostrations or to kneel down at their celebration. In this regard there seem to be a number of diverse practices. One never prostrates on the day of a Great Feast or on the leave-taking of that feast.* In some churches we refrain from prostrating on the second day of the feast, if there is a synaxis, as there is for instance for Sts Joachim and Anna on the day after the Nativity of the Virgin. It is also customary not to make prostrations throughout the whole period of some of the greatest feasts, Nativity, Theophany, and Pentecost itself (in this instance, the week-long feast itself, rather than the fifty days which end on Pentecost-Trinity Sunday, although we do kneel, of course, for the Kneeling Prayers on Trinity Sunday Vespers, for the first time since Pascha).

In addition to this, rubrics direct that we cease from prostrations on certain forefeasts. Thus, on 20 December, we are directed that although the Nativity Fast continues, in the forefeast of the Nativity we cease from prostrations. (This means, in effect, that we make no prostrations between 20 December and the leave-taking of Theophany, 14 January.) Also, by a direction appointed on Holy and Great Wednesday, the Prayer of St Ephraim is read at the end of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, and thereafter, even though it is not yet Pascha, we do not make prostrations again, except before the Winding Sheet (epitaphios, plashchanitsa), because we have already entered into the festal period.

We have noted that in the last days of Passion Week we prostrate before the Winding Sheet, although we are not otherwise making prostrations in church. A similar exception is made on those occasions when the Cross is brought out for the veneration of the faithful: on the Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on 14 September, on the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross in mid-lent, and, if it should fall at a weekend, on the feast of the Procession of the Cross on 1 August.
We should also bear in mind that the liturgical day (although not the fasting day) begins with Vespers, or more precisely, with the entrance and/or prokimenon at Vespers, and thus we do not make prostrations on a Saturday evening after the Vespers entrance, although we do do so on Sunday evening Vespers, it being a service for Monday.

Lastly and importantly, one must bear in mind that there are certain local practices and variations with regard to prostrations, as also with regard to much else within Orthodoxy. If a practice is not clean contrary to the teaching of the Ecumenical Church and thus a malpractice, there is much to be said for following the practice of the church you are in or visiting. "When in Rome..." If you are in some doubt as to what to do, a good idea is to follow the lead of the celebrant or the senior person present; in doing this you will at least be showing them respect and will be humbling yourself.
 (The Shepherd, December 1990)

At the Divine Liturgy we make    prostrations:

  • at the beginning of "It is meet and right to worship Father, Son and..."
  • at the end of the prayer, "We praise Thee, we bless..."
  • at the end of the prayer, "It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos" (or whatever hymn is used in its place)
  • at the beginning of the Lord's Prayer
  • when the Holy Gifts are brought out for communion
  • when, afterwards, the priest, holding the Gifts, says "Always, now and ever..." (except for those who have communed, who should simply bow) Note: Although prostrations are not enjoined for Saturdays, it is a common practice to make prostrations on that day during the Divine Liturgy at the points indicated above.

People as Liturgical Beings – Part 2...

People who offer ‘your own from your own, in all things and for all things’ serve God truly and pleasingly. That is, people who recognize that whatever they have is a gift from God. They believe that they’ve got nothing of their own to offer. Everything’s from God and they take from that and offer it to God, together with themselves, their world and their relations with the world. They keep nothing selfishly for themselves. They offer themselves without reservation. They give everything in order to receive everything. They die in order to live. And they offer everything in Christ and for Christ. In all things (always) and for all things (for all God’s gifts).

So the whole of people’s lives (even after the Divine Liturgy and outside the church) becomes service, offering, relationship, sacrifice, communion and thanksgiving. The whole of life is transformed into a theanthropic life.
The two hour Sunday Liturgy becomes a twenty-four hour, daily Liturgy. As Orthodox, when we speak about a liturgical life, we don’t mean our short liturgical offering in the church, but the whole of our life, which, starting with the liturgical actions in the church, becomes one of liturgy and worship.
Orthodox Christians aren’t schizophrenic. They don’t live a liturgical life inside the church and an unliturgized life outside. They spend as much time as they can in church (Liturgy and services) so that they’ll be able to live outside the church in a manner as close as possible to the spirit, the climate and the ethos of the Divine Liturgy.
Through worship in the church, the theanthropic life becomes ingrained in them and is then capable of transforming all the facets of their everyday lives.
So Christians permeated by the Liturgy live in the unity of faith and life, the divine and the human, the created and the uncreated, the living with the departed, the present age with the future, their own person with others.
This unity was also experienced by the Greek, Orthodox people when, and as long as they had an ecclesiastical life. There are still, in Greece, traditional, Orthodox people and communities who live in this unity. The centre of the whole life of traditional Orthodox settlements (villages and neighbourhoods) was the parish church, as the katholiko is in monasteries. In villages on Evia [Euboea], the parish church to this day is called the katholiki. (i.e. katholiki ekklisia).
Birth, death, baptism, marriage, school, work, social relations, joys, and sorrows, all the expressions of social life were linked to the Liturgy and the Church. In the end, they became the Church. So the everyday functions of life found their unity and order of precedence within the Divine Liturgy.
The further the Greek people distance themselves from their Orthodox roots, from their life-giving, theanthropic tradition, the less the various functions of life are organically linked to the Divine Liturgy, which is why they stop working properly, which is to say they fail to unite people or help them to live as images of God.
The various functions outside the Divine Liturgy deconstruct the human person. This is clear from the basic function of life, procreation. Within the Divine Liturgy and the Church, this fundamental function is transformed, is blessed with grace, and contributes towards the rounding out of the human person. Outside, it’s the slave of egotism, it undoes personalities and is a torment. People today have bitter experience of this situation.
Orthodox coenobitic monasteries are models of how people and their communities should function. The centre is the main church (katholiko). Buildings and obediences are all organized around the main church. The starting-point of the common life is the daily celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The purpose is the worship of God and the offering of the whole of life to Christ. This is how life can be common, faith and love universal, death can be vanquished and everything made new and given a different role in a strange and most fitting adjustment.
When the liturgical spirit of the coenobium- which is the liturgical spirit of Orthodoxy- becomes ingrained in the Orthodox, they’re preserved from the powerful and vitiating trend towards secularism. In essence, secularism is an attempt to organize life outside the Liturgy and the Church.
Orthodox Christians can’t be Orthodox unless they live liturgically. Unless the Divine Liturgy and worship are not merely ‘opportunities’ or part of their timetable, but are, instead, the life-giving shoot grafted on to their lives and transforming them, the centre, the basis, the beginning and the end. It’s only through the ‘your own from your own’ in the Divine Liturgy that people truly become themselves, that is images of God.
