Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi-On Legitimate Exercise

 Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi

Whatever movement you make, starting with its conception and following through to the implementation, you have to examine all the time what God will take from it. Because that’s all that’ll remain; all the rest will be done away with.

This is why we’re always telling you to be careful, because within the all-embracing evil of the devil, there’s also this dreadful mystery. Satan doesn’t only fight to throw his opponent and get him out of the ring and the stadium. Naturally, he’s delighted beyond belief when people listen to him and leave the stadium, the contest.

But those who aren’t convinced and get involved in the action, he doesn’t stand in their way. Not only that but he gives them support, the difference being that he disorientates them. They do their intellectual or practical work, but not in the right frame of mind. Jesus tells us: “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted”. If we look at the word literally, we’ll see that the vast majority of people alive today mourn. But of those who mourn, who will be blessed?

Only those few who mourn for God. In other words, only those who have a sense of their sinfulness and whose hearts are wounded by Godly sadness at saddening God, the center of their love, and they cry because of it. They will achieve the life of the blessed. This is why we need to be careful. The thing is not merely to act, but to act in accordance with God’s will. You see the detail with which that great luminary whom we read this morning presented that wonderful example. A certain monk decides to dedicate himself to the care of somebody who’s ill. The springboard for his decision and its implementation was that, if he carried out his plan, he’d be rewarded by God. And you saw what this great Father said, with his keen discernment: the monk wasn’t behaving properly. He’d missed the mark. Of course we can’t say that he’d sinned by his actions, but he wouldn’t get much by way of reward compared to the time and effort he put into his task. It would have been better if he’d acted in the name of affection, in the name of Christ’s commandment, in the name of our Lord’s love: “by the words of His lips, He has guarded hard ways” [Trans. note: this appears to be a free rendition of Psalm 16, 4]. This is the real aim. What’s the reason we take on an obedience in the monastery? It’s not because we’re scared of the Elder who gave the order. It’s not because we’re afraid the others will misjudge us and think we’re somehow difficult and out of order. Nor is it so that we’ll become dependable in routine jobs and supposedly obedient and unwilling to cause any upset. That’s not the aim. The point is that we should do what we have to conscientiously, and, if we had to be shown to how do it, it’s because we didn’t know. We had to accept advice humbly to get to the real aim. Once we’ve understood, once we’ve taken it on board,  then, by ourselves, even if we’re hindered, we obviously won’t react rudely, but we’ll try and find a way of settling things for the love of God. We’ll do it as an obligation, because it’s imposed by God’s command. But you never look for a reward. You never fear anyone. You don’t act because somebody’s threatening you or flattering you. You do it because you’ve realized it’s God’s will. Unless people act first on the basis of love for God and then of love for their neighbour, they’re going the wrong way, they’re disorientated.  Any indirect or oblique means that people use don’t help them get to their real goal.

This is why we need to examine our consciences all the time, in case we’ve been seduced by some passion or some desire and we’re acting in a round about way and wasting our efforts. That’s the only way you’ll acquire a clear conscience, the only way you’ll acquire real freedom, that which is in Christ. Then you’ll understand that the commandments of Our Lord “are not heavy” and that the yoke of Christ and His burden “are light”. We’re obedient to every commandment because we love Christ. We act only for Him. Not for the forgiveness of our sins- He grants that through the Cross. Nor for His kingdom. That’s an insult. He created His kingdom, He planted Paradise in the East, even before He created humankind. He doesn’t need to be shown. He needs only one proof: for people to come to their senses, to realize that they’re affronting God if they don’t obey His will. This is real contemplation, this is the real policy of our Fathers, for which they were considered demented in this world,  and were persecuted and lived outside in the deserts “in mountains and caves and holes in the ground”. Their eyes were never dry from their lamentations, their concern that perhaps they’d been seduced by the enemy, who, as I said, doesn’t attack us only from one side, to disorientate us so that we don’t act properly, but actually supports us, so long as our actions aren’t in accordance with God’s will. This is why, at least for us who are monks, it’s necessary to have this light, for these eyes to be open, for this salt always to be there. This detail of the spiritual law that we mentioned is really important and needs to be taken seriously into consideration. But I know from my own experience that a true subordinate doesn’t need such fine distinctions. Quite simply, so long as they are exact in their obedience, then they’re freed of the concern of having to discern whether they’re doing well or not, given that they’re still  in a state of infancy and childhood. This is why our Church created the coenobitic life so that the predecessors, the older monks, could take on responsibility for the younger ones. This is why our Fathers tolerated group co-existence, whereas, as you know, monks originally lived alone. But these lone monks later returned and created communities, they implemented the saying “bear one another’s burdens”. “But woe to him who bears but does not understand” writes Saint Ephaim  in his works. This is why the older monks, the experienced ones, take up the burdens of the weaker ones, out of duty. And the immature and younger monks are happy to subordinate themselves willingly, not out of servility, but out of gratitude that the older monks have agreed to set aside their concerns for themselves and have come back for them, the younger ones, and have become involved in their weaknesses. They want to teach them the spiritual law in case, through inexperience, they labour in vain and don’t achieve their goal. In this way, the law of mutual support is brought into operation.

That’s what I wanted to remind you of tonight and let none of you feel comfortable because, through acting, he’s found something. Not unless that something’s legitimate. There are a lots of contestants in the stadium, but only one takes the prize. The one who has striven legitimately. For him “there is in store the crown of righteousness which the Lord will award on that day”. Amen.

Αν γνώριζε ο άνθρωπος, την εσωτερική ασχήμια του, δεν θα επιδίωκε εξωτερικές ομορφιές. Μέσα η ψυχή του έχει τόσους λεκέδες, τόσες μουντζούρες, και θα κοιτάξουμε λ.χ. τα ρούχα μας;

Penitence and Confession...

 St. John of Kronstadt

 Homily on Penitence

Penitence is aided by conscience, memory, imagination, feeling, will. Just as we sin with all the powers of our soul, so must our repentance be all-encompassing. Repentance which is expressed only in words, without intention to reform and without any feeling of remorse is called hypocritical. If the realization of one’s sins is becoming dampened – it must be revived; if one’s emotions are becoming blunted – they must be awakened; if the will for reform is weakening – it must be sharpened: the Heavenly Kingdom is seized by force. Confession must be sincere, deep, full.

Whoever becomes accustomed to accounting for his life during confession here, will not fear to answer at the dread Judgment of Christ. For this reason a brief court of penitence has been established here on earth, so that we – cleansed and rectified through earthly repentance – would be able to give a blameless answer at Christ’s Last Judgment. This is the first motivation for sincere and regular repentance. The longer we do not repent, the worse off we are, the more tangled becomes the web of our sins, the harder it is to answer for them. The second motivation is tranquility: the sincerer our confession, the more tranquil will be our soul. Sins are like hidden snakes, eating away at a person’s heart and his entire being; they do not give him any peace, they constantly gnaw at his heart; since are like prickly thorns, continuously wounding the soul; sins are spiritual darkness. All penitents must bear the fruits of repentance.

Dear brothers and sisters – communicants! Let us dread the petrified insensitivity of our sins; let us fear the pride in our hearts which says: I do not need to be absolved of sin, I am not guilty, I am not a sinner; or – my sins are human, very light, – as though sins need to be demonic; or – I don’t mind living with my sins! This is satanic pride, and Satan repeats the same words within our heart. Let us profoundly feel – deep within our heart – our numerous iniquities, let us sigh over them from the bottom of our soul, let us shed tears of spiritual tenderness and mollify our ired Master. Let us avoid self-justification, for it is said that in God’s sight shall no man living be justified, and it is only through sincere repentance of our sins that we can propitiate the Lord. Let us eschew indifference and coldness, and let us serve the Lord with fervent zeal; let us not forget that we have now come to atone before the Master of our life and our righteous Judge for a long period of iniquitous life. Is there any place here for indifference and coldness? Should not our whole soul turn into a spiritual flame and burst out in tears of sincere repentance? O God, our God! Our iniquities have truly multiplied as the hairs on our head, as the grains of sand in the sea, and we do not comprehend them, we are indifferent to them, we do not even stop loving them. Grant to all of us, O Lord, a contrite spirit and a humble heart, that we may bring Thee our true repentance. Amen.

From the spiritual diary of St. John of Kronstadt, “My Life in Christ.”

Homily on Repentance

 Saint Ignatius Bryanchaninov

Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

With these profound and sacred words the Son of God – the Word incarnate – began His preaching to fallen mankind. A seemingly simple teaching! However, it must be experienced by one’s entire life: only then will it be revealed to us that these brief words comprise the entire teaching of the Gospel. Even the holy Apostle Paul, speaking of the teaching which he had spread over the entire then known world, said that he had testified to both the Jews and the Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Brethren! In order to come to believe in our Lord Jesus Christ – we need repentance; in order to remain in this saving faith – we need repentance; in order to succeed in it – we need repentance; in order to inherit the Heavenly Kingdom – we need repentance.
But even the one who has come to believe in Christ, who has decided to constantly prove his faith by means of actions and conduct is again in need of repentance. What do you think, dear brethren, is the first fruit of living faith? What is the first fruit of fulfilling Christ’s commandments? I borrow the answer from Saint Simeon the New Theologian, who drew upon his own holy experiences to gain knowledge of the truth. He said: “A thorough fulfillment of Christ’s commandments teaches a man his weakness.” Exactly so! No sooner does a new convert to Christ begin living according to the Gospel than his fallen nature is suddenly revealed to him . This revelation of his own self engenders in the Christian a blessed humility of the spirit, causes conscious spiritual lamentation, develops a contrite and humble heart which God will not despise. Living according to the Gospel gives rise to a feeling of repentance that is naturally induced by the Gospel. Thus repentance is necessary not only to come to believe in Christ: it is necessary to stand fast in faith, to succeed in Christ; it is necessary to have a living faith in Christ. Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
It remains to be explained why in these words of the Lord the summons to repentance and the announcement of the imminence of the Heavenly Kingdom are so closely related? Why is there no intermediate spiritual labor placed between them, no intermediate circumstance? The reason is that our Lord Jesus Christ has done everything for our salvation: He has reconciled us to God, He has acquired the prepared the Heavenly Kingdom for us. There remains only one task for us humans to perform in the matter of our salvation: the task of accepting the salvation granted to us by God, the task of penitence. The Heavenly Kingdom and the Heavenly King are incredibly close to us – much closer than we think. Behold, I stand at the door of the human heart, declares this King . and I knock at it with My all-holy and all-powerful Word: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me. It is repentance which opens the doors of the heart to this Heavenly King.
Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Amen.

Αγ.

An Interpretation of “Lord Have Mercy”

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me” or, more briefly, “Lord have mercy” was given to Christians at the time of the apostles and was appointed for them to say without ceasing, as, indeed, they do. But what this “Lord have mercy” means is something that very few people know today and so they say it in everyday speech, pointlessly, alas, and in vain. They don’t receive the Lord’s mercy, because they don’t know what they’re asking. This is why we should know that when the Son and Word of God had become incarnate, was made a human person, underwent such suffering and was crucified, shedding His most holy blood, He ransomed people from the hands of the devil. Since then He was been the Lord and Master of human nature.

Of course, even before His incarnation He was Lord of all creatures, visible and invisible, as their Creator and Maker, but not of those people and demons who, of their own volition, didn’t want Him as their Lord and Master. Our good God made people and angels free and endowed them with reason so that they would have knowledge and discretion. This is why, because He is just and true, He didn’t want to remove this freedom from them and to rule over them against their will. Those who accept His rule, He does indeed govern, but those who do not, He leaves to their own devices.

This is why, when Adam was deceived by the apostate devil, and himself apostatized from God and didn’t wish to comply with His commandment, God left him alone in his freedom: because He had no wish to become a tyrant. But the envious devil who deceived him in the first place, didn’t stop deceiving him thereafter, until he’d made him like the dumb beasts and he lived like an animal, without reason or sense. God took pity on him, however, and so He lowered the heavens and descended to earth as a person, for people. And with His most pure blood, He redeemed us from slavery to sin, teaching us through the Holy Gospel how to live in a God-pleasing manner. And, according to Saint John the Theologian, He gave us the ability to become children of God.

Through baptism, He gives us a new birth and re-shapes us, while, with His spotless sacraments, He nourishes our souls on a daily basis and invigorates them. In a word, with His great wisdom, He found a way to be inseparable from us for ever, as we are with Him, so that there’s now no room inside us for the devil. Some Christians, however, even after the many gifts they were granted and after the many blessings lavished upon them by Christ the Lord, were again deceived by the devil and did his will instead of God’s. They’re not completely insensitive, however, to the extent that they don’t realize the evil that’s befallen them.

They acknowledge their error and recognize their enslavement, but are unable, by themselves, to get rid of it. So they hasten to God, saying “Lord have mercy”, so that our merciful God will take pity on them, have mercy on them, welcome them like the Prodigal Son and give them His divine grace again. Through this grace they can rid themselves of their enslavement to sin, escape the clutches of the demons and thus live a God-pleasing life, observing the commandments of God. So these Christians who, as we’ve said, say “Lord have mercy” with this in mind, will always receive the mercy our good God and will take His grace, so as to be able to free themselves from slavery to sin and to be saved.

But those who have no idea about this matter, whether they don’t understand that their behaviour is in thrall to the flesh and to the things of this world or don’t have the opportunity to consider their enslavement, still pointlessly say “Lord have mercy”, just from habit. How it is possible for them to receive God’s mercy? Such wonderful and infinite mercy. It’d be better for them not to receive God’s mercy at all than to do so and then lose it again, because then they’d be twice to blame. Besides, if someone gives a precious stone into the hands of a little child or some uncouth person who doesn’t know its value, and they lose it, it’s obvious that it’s not they who’ve lost it but the person who gave it into their hands.

To understand this better, just think that in this world, people who are without means and live in poverty and who want to take alms from somebody rich, go to them and say “Have mercy upon me” [Or “Give me alms”. Anglo-Saxon alamosna from Greek ελεημοσύνη (eleïmosyni). So Kyrie eleïson means Lord have mercy, but also Have pity on my poverty and provide me with what is needful]. Or again, when people are in debt and want their creditor to forgive them the debt, they go ands say “Have mercy upon me”, meaning “Forgive me my lack of funds and write off what I owe you”. In the same way, people who’ve done wrong go to those they’ve wronged and said “Have mercy upon me”, that is, “Forgive me for what I’ve done to you”.

And so sinners cry out to God “Have mercy upon me” and don’t know what they’re saying or why they’re saying it, nor even what this mercy of God is that they’re asking to be given. They don’t know how it’s in their interests to ask for mercy, and they just say “Lord have mercy” out of habit, without understanding a thing. How can God give such people His mercy when, without knowing it, they despise it and lose it as soon as they’ve received it and sin again, all the more? God’s mercy is nothing other than the grace of the Holy Spirit, which we sinners have to ask from God and say without ceasing “Lord have mercy”.

In other words: “Have mercy on me, Lord, sinner that I am, in the wretched situation I find myself in, and receive me again into Your grace. Give me the spirit of strength, to resist the temptations of the devil and the evil habit of sin; give me the spirit of emotional control, so that I can feel my real self and correct my life; give me the spirit of fear, so that I may fear You and observe Your commandments; give me the spirit of love so that I may love You and no more wrench myself away from you; give me the spirit of peace, to keep my soul tranquil and concentrate all my thoughts and be still and untroubled; give me the spirit of purity, to keep me unblemished by any defilement; give me the spirit of meekness, so that I may be calm  towards my fellow-Christians and keep myself from anger; give me the spirit of humility, so that I don’t think too highly and become proud of myself”.

So those who know the need they have for all this and seek it from our merciful God, by saying “Lord, have mercy”, are certain to receive what they ask for and will be granted the mercy and divine grace of the Lord. But those who know nothing of what we’ve been talking about and say “Lord have mercy” merely out of habit cannot possibly receive the mercy of God ever. Because they’ve already received many gifts from God at an earlier time, but didn’t acknowledge them and didn’t thank God for giving them.

They received the mercy of God when they were made and became human; they received the mercy of God again when they were baptized and remade and became Orthodox Christians; they received the grace of God when they evaded spiritual and bodily dangers that threatened their lives; they received the mercy of God all the times they were able to partake of the spotless Holy Sacraments; they received the mercy of God every time they sinned against Him and saddened Him and weren’t utterly destroyed or even punished for their instruction, as they should have been; they received the mercy of God in a variety of ways, when they were granted blessings by Him and didn’t recognize them and, instead, forgot about them all and took no heed for their salvation. So  can Christians like this receive the mercy of God, without feeling and without knowing that they’re receiving such grace from God? As we’ve said, all they’re saying, all they’re doing is repeating “Lord have mercy”, without any aim or purpose, apart from habit.
