Saint Nektarios On The Inviolability of Free Will

             Βy Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis

 “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves, take up their cross and follow me”  (Matth. 16, 24).

            “Human free will is sacrosanct”. This saying demonstrates the profundity of our moral freedom. The Saviour invites people to follow Him and then leaves us free to decide this most important question for ourselves: to follow Him or turn against the way of God. He came for our salvation but does not encroach on our free will. He invites us to take an active part in our salvation, but does not violate our free will in the slightest. If people were not free and self-determining beings, we would never have deserved such great respect, we’d never have been accorded such great honour, that is to work with Christ the Saviour for our own salvation; nor, of course, would it have been left to our personal inclination, but rather we’d have been led to salvation as passive and inert creatures and would have simply accepted the effect of divine grace, which would have worked exclusively for our redemption. Truly, this is how respected and inviolate God desires our moral freedom to be; how imperious He wants our free will to be.

A study of the history of the redemption of humankind reveals the Son of God, Who became a person in order to save all of us, treading the path to His voluntary passion, bearing the sin of the world, healing our wounds, fulfilling the great mystery of divine dispensation, reconciling us with God and yet in no way infringing our free will. There you are! The gate of Paradise, which had been shut, was opened; the fiery sword which guarded the entrance was removed and the voice of the Lord invited excluded humanity to enter thereby into a place of peace and quiet. But we were left free to enter or not, as we choose.

This freedom, that is to act by choice and to follow His laws, not influenced even by God Himself, demonstrates  the absolute nature  of our free will, which derives from our moral freedom, our great value, and the high position we occupy in the creation. What great honour is rendered to us by the fact that our free will is inviolate. At the same time, with what clarity are we taught our responsibilities: that we should respect our free will; have fervent zeal; and not allow, under any circumstances, our free will to be enslaved and our moral freedom to become dependent on humiliating passions and desires.

            Our moral freedom obliges us to make provision for our salvation, because otherwise we’ll be lost. The formal recognition of our moral freedom by the Saviour Himself teaches us that our salvation is not going to be achieved solely by the absolute action of God’s grace, but also by our own consent and simultaneous action. Concerning this necessity, let’s see what the wise Fathers of the Church have to say. Chrysostom  says: Even though grace is grace, it saves only those who desire to be” (Discourse 18 on Romans). Gregory the Theologian stresses that: “Our consent is necessary; but we’ll be saved by God” (Discourse 31). Clement the Alexandrian adds: “God inspires the souls that desire; but if their readiness abandons them, then the very grace which has been given them by God will be denied them”. And Justin concludes: “God did, indeed, make people without their consent, but is unable to save them against their will”. So we are expressly and clearly taught that there are two factors in our salvation: a) the free desire of the human will and b) the grace of God.

            The prime agent in the work of our salvation is indeed the grace of God, because Christ the Saviour came as Light to those who were in the dark and shed the light of His Grace on those “dwelling in darkness and the shadow of death”. He sought the lost sheep, called back those who had strayed, spoke secretly to people’s hearts and showed us the way to salvation. It’s the grace of God which perfects and saves, yet our own will should not be accounted of any less importance. We should regard it as the outstanding gem in the crown of our salvation, since it’s the main lever that shifts our outlook that has been rendered inert by sin.

This is what urges our footsteps to follow the Saviour, this is what strengthens our hearts to show self-denial, this is what bears the cross on the shoulder. Because, although grace invites us, dispels the gloom and illumines the dark places, it’s possible  nevertheless, due to the carelessness and slothfulness, the contamination and spiritual idleness of the carnal view of life, for our free will to feign deafness, to close its eyes, to remain in darkness and to proceed in exactly the opposite direction: the one to perdition. In other words, our free will can act in total contradiction to what it actually wants. So it’s necessary for us truly to want our salvation, to seek it.

We have to want to hear, in order to hearken to the voice of  Him Who is calling us. We need to want to see in order to open our eyes to the brilliant, abundant light. We have to want to move, to follow the Saviour, to refuse to be the people we once were, with our passions and desires, in order to take the cross upon our shoulders. We must follow the “strait and circumscribed road” so that we may pass through the narrow gate of Paradise

Our own will has to come first, because this is required by the terms with which the Saviour calls those who are of a mind to follow Him. Without this disposition, it would be impossible to fulfill the terms offered, and thus salvation itself would be beyond us. On  the one hand, grace is granted, but our will and concurrence are necessary if we are to receive it. Even more so, what is required is self-denial, self-sacrifice, a stable outlook which will not allow for any deviation from the path of constantly following the voice of the Saviour, Who calls and is the voice of grace and of truth. If the grace of God which comes to us saved people by itself, the call would be entirely superfluous, as would be the terms and conditions. But though the grace of God is infinite, it doesn’t save by itself, because it doesn’t want to violate our free will.

Were it not that our consent is a vital factor in our salvation, God, in His infinite love for humankind, would, of course, save everyone, but without their consent. And yet, with very precise  terms, He did indeed call us who are enslaved to our sentiments and who tend towards sin. He offered salvation, but demanded that we conform, because this was required by a great and important provision: the stipulation that we be reborn and renewed in Jesus Christ our Saviour. Because in our former state, we could not enter the Kingdom of God, since we’d been corrupted by sin. So we had to cast off this person, with its desires and passions and put on a new person, who had been reborn, in the awareness that they were made by God in His “image”.

But in order to cast off the old person, we first have to want to do so. So our cooperation in the task of our perfection is exceptionally important. Our Saviour has told us that in His Father’s house, “there are many rooms”. The people who dwell therein are those who have lived their lives on earth in an appropriate manner. Our life-style here, therefore, defines our position in Paradise. Saint Gregory Nazianzinos has this to say on the matter: “Just as there are various, separate ways of living, so there are “many  rooms with God”, which are allocated depending on each person’s worth. One of us might have one virtue, another have them all. Given this, let each of us, from now on, cease from wandering off wherever the mood takes us and instead follow Him Who guides us well and directs us along the narrow path, in order to bring us to the broad highway of blessedness”.

             So we have to work for our salvation, otherwise we run the ultimate risk of perdition, since there’s nothing in common between light and darkness, any more than there is between good and evil. Sin, which has corrupted us, is darkness and the great evil, because it conflicts with the will of God. Since we have the privilege of moral freedom, any misconduct on our part is counted as a sin that sets us apart from God. The greater the good of moral freedom, the greater also are the responsibilities this entails. People who are morally free should become holy. This is why, in the Old and New Testaments God gives commands saying: “Become holy as I am holy” (Levit. 20, 7, 26 and I Peter, 1, 16).

Because how can people who are loathsome, people who are worthy of aversion have any sort of communion with God? And the Saviour also gives us a similar commandment when He says: “You, too, should be perfect, as our Father in heaven is perfect” (Matth. 5, 28), because His children should be like the Father Who has called them. God, then, wants us to be holy and perfect, because only those who are holy and perfect are really the children of our Father in heaven and they alone have the right to invoke His gifts, taking courage precisely from the love of a child for its Father.

They alone will inherit the kingdom of heaven. Saint Paint wrote about all of this in his epistle to the Corinthians: “Don’t you know that the unrighteous won’t inherit the kingdom of God? Don’t be deceived: no fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminates, sodomites, thieves, drunkards, nor those given to cursing, avarice and peculation will inherit the kingdom of God” (I Cor. 6, 10).  This is why the Saviour calls upon us to deny ourselves, to take up the cross on our shoulders and follow Him. “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves, take up their cross and follow me”  (Matth. 16, 24). He recognizes our moral freedom and our free will, and leaves our salvation in their care. So that people who seek their salvation will have to work to acquire it, otherwise they’ll be deprived of it. Otherwise, through their carelessness and lack of concern, they’ll be preparing themselves for the loss of eternal life and will inherit eternal hell, from which I pray that God will spare us all. Amen.

A Great Miracle of St. Nektarios in Romania!

"In a small village in Romania no priests existed and the residents went often to the Patriarch and demanded him to fulfill the empty spot. However the Patriarch did not have the means of satisfying the demand for a priest. The villagers went over and over again but their was nothing their Patriarch said that was any different... that he did not have any extra priests or else he would send one to the village.
Meanwhile people died unread (no services), others had relationships and children without marriage vows, the children and adults alike were unbaptized.
Then one day, outside of the Church a car pulled up and stopped and out stepped a priest shouting. The village was astonished.
The villagers went to the church to welcome him and asked him, "How did you come to the village after our Patriarch had said that he doesn't have a priest to send us?"
The priest answered, "Isn't that what you wished for? You wished for a priest? Now one has come."
All the villagers were glad in the presence of the new priest.
The priest began immediately working. He went to all the graves and read the [funeral] prayers. He baptized and married everyone in the village and administered Holy Communion.
One day he invited all the villagers to church and told them, "I must leave now, my mission work is done."
The villagers were saddened and confused by his announcement and asked, "Now that you came, you are leaving?"
However the priest didn't change his mind and proceeded with his decision.
When the villagers realized that their wasn't anything they could do, they thanked him.
After days, the villagers went to Patriarch and they thanked him for sending them a priest and to let him know that they would kindly appreciate it if he could send them another priest soon, but the Patriarch didn't know anything.
He said to them I didn't send a priest because I don't have one, however let me check with the [Chancellor] to see if he had sent a priest to you to serve your needs.
He phoned the [Chancellor] but he too didn't send anyone.
The Patriarch inquired, "What did this priest do for you?"
The villagers answered, "He married us, baptized us, performed funerals for our parents, he did what any other priest would have performed for us."
Then the Patriarch asked if he gave them any papers or logged the mysteries.
"Of course," said the villagers, "he gave us papers and he wrote them in the Church's books."
"Then did anyone see what he wrote? And with what name he signed?"
"All the documents were written in Romanian and we are not well educated and the signature he signed in a language we have not seen before."
The Patriarch requested they go bring the books in order to see who was this clergyman.
When they returned with the book the Patriarch remained speechless. He couldn't believe his eyes.
Indeed all the documents were written in Romanian while his name was written in Greek with the name of his signature,
Nektarios, Bishop of Pentapolis."

THIS IS AN ICON OF A DISBELIEVER AS DESCRIBED by Saint Nektarios of Pentapoleos

The unbeliever is the most unfortunate person among men because he is denied the single most precious thing in this world, faith, which is the only true guide toward truth and good fortune.  The unbeliever is so unfortunate because he has been denied hope, the only constant support on the long road of life.  The unbeliever is very unfortunate because he is missing the true love of people which surround his troubled heart.  The unbeliever is most unfortunate since he is being denied divine beauty and the divine likeness of the Creator.  This is the beauty that the Divine Artist has engraved in our hearts and which our faith has revealed to us.

            The eye of an unbeliever does not see anything else in creation but the forces of nature.  The brilliant icon of the Holy Creator and its marvelous beauty for him remain hidden and unknown to him.  His vision is out of focus in the immensity of creation.  He does not see the beauty of creation anywhere. He does not find the beauty of God’s wisdom.  He does not marvel at the great power of God.  He does not discover the goodness of God; divine providence, justice and the love of the Creator toward creation.  His mind cannot go beyond the physical world.  Neither can he go beyond the realm of his senses.  His heart remains insensitive before the image of divine wisdom and power.  Being like this does not give birth to any feelings of worship. His lips remain sealed. His mouth is motionless. His tongue is wearisome. Wearisome is his turmoil. His turmoil is pain and his pain is despair. All things until now that attracted his attention have lost their grace.  This is so because all the joys of life that he experienced are unable to make him happy.

            As long as the heart of man has been created so that God can dwell in it, the ultimate joy of man revels and rejoices in this goodness because this is found only in God.  But from the heart of an unbeliever, God has departed.  The human heart has limitless yearnings since it was created to contain and seek out the unlimited. As long as the heart of the unbeliever is no longer filled with the infinite God, everything around him groans with despair. He seeks and desires after things but nothing satisfies him.  And this is so because all the pleasures of life are powerless to fulfill the emptiness of the human heart.

            When the true pleasures and activities of the world are turned off, the heart is left with a feeling of bitterness.  The vain glories of the world are turned into grief.  The unbeliever ignores that the happiness of man is not found by indulging in worldly pleasures but are found in the love of God, which is infinite and eternal good.  It is here where we find the misfortune of those who ignore God.  He who denies God is like that person who denies his happiness and its unending blessedness.  The unfortunate one struggles with the toilsome battles of life without the presence of God.

            And so, in despair and fear nestled in his heart, the unbeliever walks to his already opened grave.  The miraculous work that unfolds before his eyes is played out on the world stage and is directed by divine wisdom, grace and power. All these things pass by him  completely unnoticed. These things play a principal role in ones’ life with the assistance of harmony and divine goodness. Although the sweet water of the river of joy and happiness flows by his feet, he is unable in his disbelief to quench the dryness of his tongue. It is a thirst that burns him because the running water from the gurgling well is unshaken because his voice cannot be heard coming out of his chest, singing praises; glorifying and thanking God.

            The joy that is unfurled in the universe has forsaken the heart of the unbeliever because God has distanced Himself from it.  The emptiness has been filled with sorrow. It remains obstinate because of the absence of a desire to seek the spiritual has overwhelmed his soul.  He is misled in this dark night without any light, a night where no beam of light enlightens his darkened avenues.  There is no one to direct and guide his steps. In the race of life he is alone.  He navigates life without the hope of a better life.  He walks among many traps and there is no one to free him from them. He falls into these traps and is burdened by the weight of them.  There is no one to relieve him of his sorrow.

            The peace of the soul and the quietness of the heart have been banished by disbelief. Grief has bound up the depths of his heart.  The joy which a believer finds in fulfilling the holy commandments and the joy that comes from a moral life is for the unbeliever unknown.  Joy that comes from faith has never visited the heart of the unbeliever.  The conviction which flows from faith in divine providence and which lighten the struggles of life is an unknown power to the unbeliever.

            The feeling of thanksgiving and favor that comes from love is a great mystery to the unbeliever.  The disbeliever who places material things first has limited true happiness for himself in a very limited circle of fleeting enjoyment.  This is so because he is always attempting to satisfy himself with material things.  The desire for virtue is for him completely foreign.  He has not tasted the sweetness of this grace. The disbeliever has overlooked that which is the source of true joy and he is rushing without realizing it, toward the source of bitterness.  Indulgence filled his worldly desires and in fulfilling them has only brought him nothing but emptiness.  This emptiness brought faith but then slipped away and fell from  his lips.

            Oh, unfortunate slave of a difficult tyrant!  How did they steal the joy of life from you?  How did they rip away from you this profound treasure?  You lost your faith. You denied your God. You denied His revelation to you and then you threw away the bountiful gift of divine grace.  How unfortunate is the life of such a person!  This life is filled with a whole host of troubles for the unbeliever because the delight of life has lost its flavor before his very eyes.  Nature around him appears sterile and infertile because it does not fill him with any sense of joy and delight. He does not rejoice in any of the creations of God.  A veil of grief envelopes all of nature and it no longer attracts a sense of fascination for him. His life has become an impossible burden and with the passing of time appears to him to be an unbearable hardship.

            This is why despair appears before him like an executioner and terrible torturer.  It terrorizes the unfortunate man.  His courage has already abandoned him. His resistance is weakened and his moral moorings have since been corrupted by lack of faith.  He appears like a man who is motivated completely by something else, that is disbelief.  He has surrendered his life to the fearful shackles of despair which are devoid of mercy and sympathy.  The thread of his life is forcefully and cruelly cut off from the gifts of God and is hurled to the depths of perdition, to the darkness of hell from where he can only be saved when he is called by the voice of his Divine Creator.  This is the Creator that he has denied all his life and now he must give account for his disbelief.  Then he will be judged and will be sent to the eternal fire.

Ποιοί λοιπόν εἶναι εὐτυχέστεροι ἀπ’ αὐτούς τούς ἀνθρώπους;
Καί ἀπό ποιό ἀγαθό μπορεῖ νά μείνουν στερημένοι;

The Writings of Saint Nektarios

Selected Passages From the Writings of Orthodox Saints
Compiled by Father Demetrios Serfes

Christianity.
Christian religion is not a certain philosophic system, about which learned men, trained in metaphysical studies, argue and then either espouse or reject, according to the opinion each one has formed. It is faith, established in the souls of men, which ought to be spread to the many and be maintained in their consciousness.
There are truths in Christianity that are above out intellectual comprehension, incapable of being grasped by the finite mind of man. Our intellect takes cognizance of them, becomes convinced of their reality, and testifies about their supernatural existence.
Christianity is a religion of revelation. The Divine reveals its glory only to those who have been perfected through virtue. Christianity teaches perfection through virtue and demands that its followers become holy and perfect. It disapproves of and opposes those who are under the influence of the imagination. He who is truly perfect in virtue becomes through Divine help outside the flesh and the world, and truly enters another, spiritual world; not, however, through the imagination, but through the effulgence of Divine grace. Without grace, without revelation, no man, even the most virtuous, can transcend the flesh and the world.
God reveals Himself to the humble, who live in accordance with virtue. Those who take up the wings of the imagination attempt the flight of Ikaros and have same end. Those who harbor fantasies do not pray; for he that prays lifts his mind and heart towards God, whereas he that turns to fantasies diverts himself. Those who are addicted to the imagination have withdrawn from God's grace and from the realm of Divine revelation. They have abandoned the heart in which grace is revealed and have surrendered themselves to the imagination, which is devoid of all grace. It is only the heart that receives knowledge about things that are not apprehended by the senses, because God, Who dwells and moves within it, speaks within it and reveals to it the substance of things hoped for.
SEEK GOD daily. But seek Him in your heart, not outside it. And when you find Him, stand with fear and trembling, like the Cherubim and the Seraphim, for your heart has become a throne of God. But in order to find God, become humble as dust before the Lord, for the Lord abhors the proud, whereas He visits those that are humble in heart, wherefore He says: "To whom will I look, but to him that is meek and humble in heart?"
THE DIVINE LIGHT illumines the pure heart and the pure intellect, because these are susceptible to receiving light; whereas impure hearts and intellects, not being susceptible to receiving illumination, have an aversion to the light of knowledge, the light of truth; they like darkness... God loves those who have a pure heart, listens to their prayers, grants them their requests that lead to salvation, reveals Himself to them and teaches the mysteries of the Divine nature.

On Godly and Ungodly Zeal

The zealot according to knowledge, motivated by the love of God and his neighbor, does all things with love and self-effacement; he does nothing that might bring sorrow to his neighbor; such a zealot is enlightened by knowledge and nothing prompts him to deviate from what is morally right.

The Christian who is inspired by zeal not according to knowledge is a ruinous man who turns the Gospel of Grace and love upside down. His zeal is a seductive fire, a consuming fire. Destruction comes forth from him and desolation follows in his wake. He beseeches God to send down fire from Heaven and to devour all of those who do not embrace his principles and convictions. He is characterized by hatred for those of other religions and confessions, envy and persistent anger, violent resistance to the true spirit of Divine Law, an unreasonable obstinacy in defending his own views, a passionate zeal for prevailing in all things, the love of glory, quarrels, contention, and a love of turmoil.

 From Self-Knowledge, pp. 135-136.

The Church.

The term CHURCH, according to the strict Orthodox view, has two meanings, one of them expressing its doctrinal and religious character, that is, its inner, peculiarly spiritual essence, and the other expressing its external character. Thus, according to the Orthodox confession, the Church is defined in a twofold manner: as a religious institution, and as a religious community (koinonia).
The definition of the CHURCH as a religious institution may be formulated thus: The Church is a divine religious institution of the New Testament, built by our Savior Jesus Christ through His incarnate Dispensation, established upon faith on the day of holy Pentecost by the descent of the All-Holy Spirit upon the holy Disciples and Apostles of the Savior Christ, whom He rendered instruments of Divine grace for the perpetuation of His work of redemption. In this institution is entrusted the totality of revealed truths; in it operates Divine grace through the Mysteries; in it are regenerated those, who with faith, approach Christ the Savior; in it has been preserved both the written and the unwritten Apostolic teaching and tradition.
The definition of the CHURCH as a religious community may be formulated thus: The CHURCH is a society of men united in the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace.
The right view of the CHURCH is that the CHURCH is distinguished into the Militant and the Triumphant; and that it is Militant so long as it struggles against wickedness for the prevalence of the good, the Triumphant in the heavens, where there dwells the choir of the Righteous, who struggled and were made perfect in the faith in God and in virtue.

Immortality of the soul.

The rational soul of man has supernatural, infinite aspirations. If the rational soul were dependent upon the body and died together with the body, it should necessarily submit to the body and follow it in all its appetites. Independence would have been contrary both to the laws of nature and to reason, because it disturbs the harmony between the body and the soul. As dependent upon the body it should submit to the body and follow in all its appetites and desires, whereas, on the contrary, the soul masters the body, imposes its will upon the body. The soul subjugates and curbs the appetites and passions of the body, and directs them as it (the soul) wills. This phenomenon comes to the attention of every rational man; and whoever is conscious of his own rational soul is conscious of the soul's mastery over the body.
The mastery of the soul over the body is proved by the obedience of the body when it is being led with self-denial to sacrifice for the sake of the abstract ideas of the soul. The domination by the soul for prevalence of its principles, ideas, and views would have been entirely incomprehensible if the soul died together with the body. But a mortal soul would never have risen to such a height, would never have condemned itself to death along with the body for the prevalence of abstract ideas that lacked meaning, since no noble idea, no noble and courageous thought has any meaning for a mortal soul.
A soul, therefore, which is capable of such things, must be immortal.

Repentance.

Two factors are involved in man's salvation: the grace of God and the will of man. Both must work together, if salvation is to be attained.
Repentance is a Mysterious through which he who repents for his sins confesses before a Spiritual Father who has been appointed by the Church and has received the authority to forgive sins, and receives from this Spiritual Father the remission of his sins and is reconciled with the Deity, against Whom he sinned.
Repentance signifies regret, change of mind. The distinguishing marks of repentance are contrition, tears, aversion towards sin, and love of the good.

1. Εκτός από τη δημιουργία του αισθητού κόσμου και τη δημιουργία του ανθρώπου, δημιούργησε ο Θεός και άλλα λογικά όντα;

2. Από που γνωρίζουμε για τον υπεραισθητό κόσμο;

3. Που αναφέρεται στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη η ύπαρξη των αγγέλων;

4. Που αναφέρεται στην Καινή Διαθήκη η δημιουργία του υπεραισθητού κόσμου;

5. Γιατί οι άγγελοι ονομάζονται πνεύματα;

6. Που αναφέρεται στην Αγία Γραφή ότι οι άγγελοι είναι ασώματοι;

 7. Τι λένε οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας για την πνευματική φύση των αγγέλων;

8. Υπόκειντο οι άγγελοι στην αμαρτία;

9. Τι λέει η Αγία Γραφή γι αυτό;

10. Πως ονομάζονται οι άγγελοι που τήρησαν την αρχή τους;

11. Υπόκεινται τώρα πλέον οι αγαθοί άγγελοι στην αμαρτία;
12. Υπάρχει τώρα πλέον στα πονηρά πνεύματα η δυνατότητα επιστροφής τους στο Θεό;

13. Πόσα είναι τα αγγελικά τάγματα, δηλ. τα τάγματα της ουράνιας ιεραρχίας;
14. Τι λένε οι Γραφές για τον αριθμό των αγγέλων;

15. Τι λένε οι Γραφές για τη δύναμη των αγγέλων;
16. Ποίες είναι οι ενασχολήσεις των αγγέλων;

13:30-39 και 25:17).
17. Είναι οι άγγελοι αθάνατοι κατά φύση;

18. Ποιές είναι οι διάφορες σημασίες που έχει η λέξη άγγελος στην Αγία Γραφή;

19. Τι ήσαν τα Χερουβείμ;

20. Ποιά είναι η ετυμολογία της λέξης Σεραφείμ, και τι λένε οι Γραφές περί αυτών;

21. Υπάρχει απόδειξη ότι οι άγγελοι ανήκουν σε διάφορες τάξεις;
